Job description

Job Purpose

Ensure the manufacturing quality and field reliability of enterprise handheld mobile computers and data-capture terminals. Verify barcode scanning, RFID/NFC, wireless communication, software/firmware, power/charging, display/touch and ruggedized mechanical functions against customer specifications; prevent escapes through process controls, data analysis, failure investigation and cross-functional corrective actions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product and process quality assurance for handheld terminals Monitor assembly, software loading, test and outgoing quality across assigned handheld-terminal models; verify critical functions such as barcode scan/decoding, RFID/NFC read/write, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/cellular connectivity, display/touch, camera, speaker, battery and charging, based on each model’s specifications.
  • Functional defect containment and disposition Identify functional, cosmetic and reliability defects; trigger authorized stop/hold and SN/lot containment, assess firmware/hardware impact and shipment risk, and coordinate MRB, repair, sorting and controlled release.
  • Product failure analysis and corrective action Lead/coordinate 8D/RCCA investigations for scan failures, RFID/NFC performance, connectivity, power/charging, firmware–shipping-image discrepancies, intermittent faults and customer-use escapes; verify root cause, corrective action and recurrence prevention.
  • Quality data and field-failure trend management Analyze manufacturing DPPM, defect Pareto, FPY/RFTY, retest and repair rates, OOB/outgoing escapes, RMA/field returns and function-specific failures by model, station, shift, hardware revision and firmware version.
  • Product-specific test coverage and risk controls
  • Partner with PE, TE, RD, Production and CTQ to verify PFMEA/Control
  • Plan alignment, station test coverage, scan/RFID/NFC performance limits, calibrated fixtures, MES/SFCS fail-lock interlocks, software image/version control and error-proofing effectiveness.
  • NPI, firmware/change control and quality readiness Support new product/model/SKU launches and ECNs; assess changes to scanner/RFID modules, antennas, wireless functions, firmware, test limits and shipping image; verify FAI, test readiness, qualification/reliability evidence and pre-shipment risks.
  • Cross-functional problem solving and reliability improvement Lead assigned cross-functional investigations with Production, PE, TE, RD, SQM and customer quality teams, including component/vendor issues and usage-scenario replication (repeated scanning, mobile connectivity, drops, dust/water exposure where applicable).
  • Customer/field quality support and audit readiness Prepare customer-ready failure summaries, traceability, test logs, firmware/build information, RCCA evidence and validation results; support customer audits, return analysis and closure verification.

Authority & Accountability Authorized to initiate quality containment and escalation under approved procedures, require relevant process/inspection evidence, convene cross-functional problem-solving meetings, and lead assigned quality improvement projects. Product release, concession and shipment approvals remain with designated authorized roles.

Qualifications & Competencies

Bachelor’s degree in Quality, Industrial, Electronics, Manufacturing or a related engineering discipline; equivalent relevant manufacturing experience may be considered.

Preferred

3+ years of QA/QE experience in handheld terminals, mobile computers, smartphones, scanners or other embedded/wireless electronic products, including factory test and functional failure analysis. Knowledge of 8D/RCCA, PFMEA, CP, MSA, SPC and sampling; practical understanding of barcode engines, RFID/NFC, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/cellular, battery/charging, test fixtures, MES/SFCS and firmware version control is strongly preferred.

Strong data analysis, shop-floor investigation, communication, Excel and technical reporting skills; capable of producing concise English quality reports and managing multi-function corrective actions.
