Sr Software Engineer

Job description

Seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Workflow Data Fabric, Integration Hub team in Hyderabad. This role is for a strong backend engineer who owns significant components end to end, drives technical design for integration and protocol capabilities used by thousands of customers, and raises the engineering bar for the team. Prior ServiceNow experience is a plus but not required; we expect the ability to ramp quickly on the platform.

Technical Skills

Required: Expert-level Java or JavaScript/Node.js, with deep engineering fundamentals: concurrency, memory management, performance profiling

• Design of REST/SOAP APIs and integration frameworks that other teams and customers build on In-depth knowledge of OAuth 2.0, JSON Web Tokens (JWT), mutual Transport Layer Security (mTLS) and API key authentication, including token lifecycle, credential storage and security hardening Distributed systems design: retries, idempotency, backpressure, rate limiting, circuit breaking and graceful degradation Data modeling, SQL and query optimization at scale, including indexing strategy and diagnosing slow queries in production Observability: logging, metrics and tracing designed in from the start so failures are diagnosable Automated testing (unit, integration, contract and performance) and continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline design ServiceNow platform scripting (Glide APIs, Script Includes, Business Rules, Scripted REST APIs) and Flow Designer spoke development, or the ability to ramp on these quickly Key Responsibilities: Own a feature area or component end to end: technical direction, design, build, test, documentation, release and post-release health Author and review design documents for integration and protocol interfaces that customers can extend and customize without forking the product
• Define versioning and backward compatibility strategy for public contracts, and guard it in design and code reviews
• Design for failure and scale: rate limits, timeouts, partial responses, unavailable remote systems, high throughput and long-running operations, with failure modes that are explicit rather than silent
• Lead investigation of complex, escalated customer integration failures spanning the platform, the network and the remote system, and drive fixes at root cause along with preventive changes
• Identify and pay down technical debt, performance bottlenecks and reliability risks in your area Mentor IC1 and IC2 engineers through design reviews, code reviews and pairing, and set quality standards for tests and documentation
• Collaborate with product management, user experience, quality engineering and adjacent platform teams to shape scope and sequence delivery

Qualifications

Experience in leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving.

This may include using AI-powered tools, automating workflows, analyzing AI-driven insights, or exploring AI's potential impact on the function or industry. 5+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of owning backend systems or services in production Expert-level Java or JavaScript/Node.js and strong computer science fundamentals

• Demonstrated experience designing, consuming and debugging integrations against third-party systems you don't control, including handling of undocumented or inconsistent behavior
• Strong working knowledge of OAuth 2.0, JWT, mutual TLS and API key authentication flows, and the security trade-offs between them Experience designing APIs or extension points with backward compatibility and versioning requirements
• Proven debugging and root-cause analysis across system boundaries in production environments Data modeling, SQL and query optimization for large datasets Automated testing as part of your own delivery, and experience improving test strategy for a team Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical design discussions Agile, sprint-based development experience Clear written communication, including design documents and technical decision records Good to Have (top priority when comparing candidates)

Protocol-level work

JSON-RPC, WebSockets, Server-Sent Events, streaming or long-lived connections, including connection lifecycle and resilience Experience deploying to AWS EKS, Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) or Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) Model Context Protocol (MCP), tool or function calling, agent-facing API design Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) / Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) drivers, database connectivity, or query engine internals Experience building platform or developer-facing products (SDKs, connectors, integration frameworks) React or a comparable frontend framework
