Job description

Introduction

At IBM Research, we are the innovation engine of IBM. Exploring what’s next in computing and shaping the technologies the world will rely on tomorrow. From advancing AI and hybrid cloud to pioneering practical quantum computing, we anticipate challenges and unlock new opportunities for clients, partners, and society. Working in Research means joining a team that accelerates discovery at the intersection of high-performance computing, AI, quantum, and cloud.

You’ll collaborate with leading scientists, engineers, and visionaries to push boundaries and turn ideas into reality. With a culture built on curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, IBM Research offers the opportunity to grow your career while contributing to breakthroughs that transform industries and change the world. Your role and responsibilities

  • Investigate sources of qubit decoherence, particularly TLS and materials-related loss.
  • Design and perform cryogenic measurements of qubits, resonators, and TLS.
  • Develop techniques to identify and characterize TLS and their impact on qubit performance.
  • Correlate device performance with materials, fabrication processes, and device design.
  • Develop and validate strategies to improve qubit coherence and device yield.
  • Collaborate across device design, fabrication, and quantum hardware teams. Required technical and professional expertise
  • Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with superconducting qubits, cryogenic measurements, or microwave quantum devices.
  • Strong understanding of superconducting qubit physics and decoherence mechanisms.
  • Experience designing experiments, analyzing data, and interpreting complex measurements.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills. Preferred technical and professional experience
  • Experience studying two-level systems (TLS) and their impact on qubit coherence.
  • Experience with qubit and resonator spectroscopy, including TLS spectroscopy and avoided crossings.
  • Experience with superconducting materials, interfaces, Josephson junctions, or qubit fabrication.
  • Experience with dilution refrigerators and microwave measurement systems.
  • Experience connecting device performance to materials, fabrication processes, or device design. IBM is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal-opportunity employer.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, caste, genetics, pregnancy, disability, neurodivergence, age, veteran status, or other characteristics.
