Role Summary

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing, programming, troubleshooting, maintaining and enhancing Power Plant Controller controls code using CODESYS development platform for Utility Scale Solar projects . This role involves understanding new and changing requirements, analyzing the exiting code and converting the functional requirements into the PLC program. The engineer will ensure proper implementation of interlocks, sequencing, and safety mechanisms required for Electrical and Energy Management Systems, while supporting system optimization, commissioning, and long-term maintainability.

Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, commissioning, and operations teams across the system lifecycle, from design through deployment. Contribute to continuous improvement of control architecture, coding standards, and system performance.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and modify Power Plant Controller (PPC) controls code using CODESYS platform. Implement control sequences, interlocks, alarms, and safety mechanisms for Electrical and Energy Management Systems. Perform system testing activities including unit testing, FAT, SAT, and on-site/remote commissioning. Troubleshoot field issues to minimize system downtime. Integrate PPC with HMI/SCADA. Ensure compliance with applicable electrical, safety, and engineering standards.

Prepare and maintain technical documentation including control logic descriptions and test reports. Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, and software teams throughout the project lifecycle. Support continuous improvement initiatives related to performance, reliability, and maintainability of control systems.

Collaboration and Communication

Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, and product managers, to deliver integrated solutions. Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders to gather requirements and provide updates on project progress. Develop and execute test cases and test scripts (manual and automated) based on product requirements. Identify, document, and track bugs using standard defect tracking tools (e.g., DevOps).

Required Skills

Experience developing control systems for utility scale solar projects is a must. Hands-on experience of applications development, systems integration, testing and troubleshooting of SoftPLC/HMI/DCS using CODESYS development platform. Experience in developing and working with Hardware-in-Loop Simulator is desirable. Experience of any other standard platform (Siemens, Schneider, Allen Bradley or Delta) would also be beneficial.

Should be proficient in program development using Structured Text (ST) and ExST under CODESYS Automation Server and scripting. Should have an understanding of standard notations used in electrical systems. Experience of handling industrial protocols like Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet IP, DNP3, etc. Experience in setting up and integration with OPC Server and OPC Client. Exposure to GIT for source code control would be beneficial.

Familiarity with HMI/SCADA systems, including integration, alarm handling, and visualization. Strong experience in programming using CODESYS. Ability to analyze existing controls code, implement enhancements, and refactor logic to meet new or changing requirements. Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) for managing control code. Strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to continuous improvement, documentation, and adherence to engineering standards.

Prerequisites

Qualification - BE/B Tech/MCA. The candidate should have a minimum of 6+ years of experience.
