Maintenance Manager - Decatur, IL
This is a full-time, exempt position.
Position Summary
This position leads the strategy, talent, and day-to-day execution of the largest and most complex maintenance organization in ADM's Specialty Ingredients network. Maintenance responsibilities include mechanical, instrumentation and electrical maintenance. As the Maintenance Manager for ADM's flagship Decatur Protein facility — an approximately 350-person, 24/7 operation processing Soybeans into value-added protein products — this leader owns safety, reliability, and cost performance for one of the Specialty Ingredients network most capital-intensive, highest-throughput sites, with approximately 150 ADM and contractor colleagues reporting through the organization.
Based on the scale and visibility of the Decatur East Plant, this role sets the standard other ADM maintenance Specialty Ingredients organizations are benchmarked against and is considered a strong pipeline for future growth into Regional Maintenance, RCM Lead, or Plant Superintendent roles with ADM.
This is a senior plant leadership position that calls for a proven, high-caliber leader with a track record of building and running large, complex maintenance organizations — not simply executing an existing program. The ideal candidate has led maintenance or reliability functions at scale, influenced peers and senior leaders across a multi-site network, and is comfortable working in operations from the shop floor to the corporate boardroom.
The Maintenance Manager will spend significant time in the field mentoring, auditing practices, and coaching their leadership team, while also representing Decatur East Plants maintenance functions at the plant and corporate level, combining their deep technical credibility in R&M systems, predictive/preventative programs and RCM best practices with the strategic judgment to prioritize capital investment, and the people leadership to build bench strength across multiple layers of our organization.
Scope & Organizational Impact
- Largest maintenance organization in the ADM's Specialty Ingredients network: 350 total site colleagues, ~150 reporting through this role
- Leads through a multi-layered leadership team (superintendents/supervisors), not solely through individual contributors
- Owns and defends a multi-million-dollar annual R&M budget and partners on long-range capital strategy for the East Plant complex
- Expected to set and export best practices as the benchmark facility for other ADM Specialty Ingredient sites
Essential Job Functions
- Actively ensure that all ADM employees, visitors, vendors, and contractors understand and align with ADM safety policies and procedures
- Require safety and compliance with all state and federal regulations, and ADM policies
- Work closely with compliance personnel to ensure continuous audit readiness in a PSM and Food Safe-Ready to Eat plant
- Lead and continually improve a maintenance program that maintains assets efficiently to meet production and quality goals
- Own the site's yearly R&M budget, including capital planning, monthly tracking/reporting, and cost-overage prevention
- Lead and develop a multi-layered leadership team capable of executing efficient maintenance planning and scheduling at scale
- Guide the department toward a cohesive, positive climate that achieves organizational goals across a large, complex workforce
- Strategically utilize ADM RCM CoE resources and incorporate network standards and best practices
- Uphold an effective training program for new and existing maintenance techs, including cross-functional training with operations
- Apply Performance Excellence/Continuous Improvement tools to meet department and facility goals
- Identify and prioritize maintenance improvement and capital projects for one of ADM's Specialty Ingredients most capital-intensive sites
Required Education
- B.S. in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, or Ag preferred) or equivalent experience
- Advanced degree (MBA or MS) is a plus, given the scope and strategic nature of this role
Required Experience
- Leadership experience where performance accountability and culture change is demonstrated and driven. Experience leading teams in a union environment a plus.
- 5+ years of experience in an industrial maintenance supervisory/leadership role is required; preferably in a continuous food processing environment.
- Strong mentorship capability and people development skills.
- Knowledge and proficiency maintaining CMMS systems (Maximo preferred) and efficient warehousing procedures.
- Demonstratable experience and capability utilizing RCM CoE resources to implement/update maintenance reliability standards.
- Proficient in Microsoft office applications and general PowerBi utilization.
- On-call accessibility/availability nights, weekends and/or holidays (ADM cell phone provided).
Excited about this role but don’t think you meet every requirement listed?
We encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this role or another one of our openings.
ADM requires the successful completion of a background check.
