Job description

Amazon Robotics Autonomous Fleet Services (AFS) is building the intelligence that turns autonomous robots into fleets that work together. Our software orchestrates thousands of robots across some of the most complex logistics operations in the world, so that every robot, every task, and every minute counts. We are growing and seek a talented, enthusiastic, and motivated SDM to lead our Fleet Management team.

The Fleet Management team builds the brain of the fleet: the system that sees everything happening on the floor, decides what every robot does next, and keeps operations running as conditions change around it. You will lead a team of top-notch engineers and scientists solving some of the hardest problems at the intersection of robotics and large-scale distributed systems. The systems you build will set the pace for how autonomous fleets operate.

They will scale to thousands of robots working safely and efficiently alongside people, and grow as Amazon's robotics footprint expands across the globe.

The successful candidate will be a collaborative, hands-on manager with a track record of leading engineering and science teams to build high-performance, scalable, and highly available distributed systems that solve real-world problems. Experience in areas such as large-scale distributed systems, real-time task allocation and scheduling, fleet or resource management, event-driven architectures, and running production services with high operational standards is strongly desired.

Familiarity with robotics, logistics, or warehouse automation is a plus.

Key job responsibilities

- Define and execute a research & development roadmap for the autonomous fleet management that appropriately balances near-term incremental improvements with long-term vision

- Mentor and grow a team of talented, motivated applied scientists and software engineers

- Establish and drive operational excellence best practices to ensure the team consistently produces and maintains high quality software.

- Work with Product Management to define current and future mobile robotics use-cases and align them with the team’s R&D efforts

- Collaborate with partner tech teams in AR’s autonomous mobility program to align priorities, develop a cohesive system architecture, and identify cross-functional opportunities for improvement (e.g. improved performance, reduced complexity)
