Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Systems Development Engineer to lead the development of automation software for our mainstream compute and bare metal network infrastructure. You will work across multiple teams and organizations to build scalable, reliable systems that power our distributed storage platform.

The AWS Hardware Engineering team creates server designs for Amazon’s innovative web services. Our designs are industry-leading in frugality and operational excellence, and are critical to the success of the AWS business and millions of customers who use AWS today. Our engineers solve challenging technology problems, and build architecturally sound, high-quality components to enable AWS to realize critical business strategies.

The ideal candidate for this role will be an innovative self-starter. You are knowledgeable of the full technical stack - vertically from core platform compute and bare metal network server hardware up to the software in userland, and everything in the middle. You have tremendous interest in cloud scale and curious how systems and software decisions impact the user. You insist on highest-standards and are able to develop tactical solutions/tools to diagnose and fix issues.

You are an excellent systems debugger - finding interaction issues between components on server systems. You are a leader with strong organizational, planning, and communication skills. You are a builder!

Key job responsibilities

You will be a technical leader solving complex architectural problems which may not defined before hand. You will manage a mix of software and system engineers that are pushing the technology envelope with novel inventions to design and validate products at scale. You will understand the current infrastructure and come up with plans to improve the tools and processes for designing, validating and monitoring fleet performance of the products.

Interacting with internal interdisciplinary teams, you will oversee the platform development efforts and the test content and work with the component partner teams to drive the requirements for the platform. You will oversee the system integration, development and testing for the tools that validate sub systems(CPU/memory/PCIe/power etc). You will standardize testing and define telemetry and alarming for the platforms the team designs.

Maintaining healthy vendor relationships is critical to stay ahead of the curve, including proactive communication and rapidly resolving issues.

A day in the life

Working with a variety of job roles (SDEs, SDETs, Hardware Engineers, TPMs, Managers, Principals) and groups (AWS Hardware Engineering, EC2, other AWS services) through server conception, test, launch, and operations. Driving high quality and reliability into future/new designs for AWS core compute and bare metal server solutions for AWS Cloud.

About the team

System Development Engineers in AWS Hardware Engineering wear many hats. From orchestration tooling development, to hardware integration, to kernel driver debugging, we dive deep into problems across the breadth of AWS. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of rapidly coming up to speed on new engineering disciplines, making impactful decisions within that space, and have experience gluing together components written by more specialized engineers to create a cohesive, well-running engineering product.
