## Job description

### Role summary

As a Software Engineer III, you will design and develop automation solutions that improve the scalability, reliability, and efficiency of Microsoft's enterprise infrastructure. You will build self-service platforms, infrastructure automation, and operational tool that support hardware lifecycle management, provisioning, and fleet-scale operations across more than 70,000 servers. Working closely with datacenter operations, engineering teams, and vendor partners, you will troubleshoot complex production issues, drive root cause analysis, and improve service reliability.

Your expertise in Linux, cloud-native technologies, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and automation will help reduce operational toil, improve MTTR, and enable sustainable infrastructure growth.

### About the team

The Enterprise Compute Frontline (ECF) team manages one of Microsoft’s largest on-premises infrastructure environments, supporting over 70,000 servers globally. The team focuses on hardware operations, infrastructure automation, incident response, observability, provisioning, and platform engineering to maintain service availability and reliability. Combining infrastructure expertise with software engineering, ECF develops automation, self-service platforms, AI-driven tools, and large-scale workflows that improve operational efficiency and reduce manual tasks.

Engineers tackle complex infrastructure challenges, directly influencing the scalability, reliability, and advancement of intelligent infrastructure operations.

### What you'll do

Design and implement automation solutions for infrastructure provisioning, hardware lifecycle management, and fleet-scale operations. Automate break/fix workflows, incident response processes, and operational tasks to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort. Develop self-service platforms, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions, and CI/CD pipelines that improve scalability and reliability. Troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive rapid service recovery across large-scale environments.

Collaborate with datacenter operations, hardware vendors, and engineering teams to support critical infrastructure services. Improve observability, monitoring, compliance, and operational excellence through automation and platform engineering initiatives. Participate in on-call rotations and drive continuous improvements that reduce MTTR and increase service reliability.

### What you'll bring

Experience managing and automating large-scale Linux, VMware/Nutanix, and Kubernetes environments. Strong expertise in Python, Ansible, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), and CI/CD automation. Ability to build self-service infrastructure solutions that improve scalability and reduce operational toil. Knowledge of hardware lifecycle management, provisioning, break/fix operations, and reliability engineering. Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills in production environments.

Experience improving observability, service reliability, and MTTR through automation. Ability to collaborate across engineering, datacenter operations, vendor teams, and cross-functional stakeholders. Experience supporting highly available services, participating in on-call rotations, driving automation initiatives, improving operational excellence, and enabling resilient infrastructure at scale.
