The Substation Physical Design group is responsible for engineering, design, and coordination of substation projects including development of detailed design packages, material specifications, and vendor qualification and approval. This position provides support for construction activities, for operational or maintenance problems, and serves as a resource in emergency restoration of failed equipment. ### JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Make safety our number one priority using a “Safety First” mentality and leading by example. Lead the activities of Physical Design group to ensure high productivity, excellent quality of design, and the proper use of resources to meet project schedules. Serve as the primary interface for our opco clients, internal design teams, and other business partners. Select and develop top talent for the Physical Design team. Assign resources to projects, ensure appropriate design durations, and ensure schedule commitments are met. Participate in, support, or lead initiatives for Substation Engineering and Power Delivery. Support the development of design standards and criteria for use on the Southern Company System. Provide leadership, guidance, and support to employees for daily activities in Physical Design. Develop and support a strong and effective team environment within Substation Engineering and with operating company partners. ### JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education & Experience: BS degree in engineering preferred -OR- other degree with applicable experience. Professional Engineer license preferred. Experience with design, maintenance, or operation of substations in the power utility environment. ### Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Demonstrated ability to successfully implement and lead safe behaviors in the workplace. Demonstrated leadership skills including ability to inspire and motivate others, foster teamwork, create an inclusive environment, and effectively lead change. Proven experience providing solutions and value to customers. Knowledge and experience of substation design and maintenance; specific expertise in physical design and layout; substation equipment; and substation design methods, standards, and criteria. Proven effective interpersonal, communication, teamwork, and presentation skills. Demonstrated understanding of managing accountability and performance of self and team members. Ability to coach and develop technical personnel. Extensive problem-solving skills. Proven ability to establish and maintain peer and customer relationships across organizations. Ability to make authoritative decisions and take necessary action in routine and emergency situations.
