## Job description

### Overview

We are a small (but mighty!) product design team focused on improving digital banking experiences for M&T customers. We’re looking for a Senior Product Designer for Nota, M&T Bank’s banking platform built specifically for attorneys and small law firms. As the first dedicated designer for Nota, you’ll work in a startup-like environment and wear multiple hats across research, discovery, design, and user validation. You’ll help facilitate Nota’s client advisory council, and partner closely with Product and Engineering to turn customer needs into thoughtful digital experiences.

You’ll also be part of a broader product design team responsible for online and mobile banking experiences across M&T’s Business and Wealth banking, giving you a strong community of designers to collaborate with and learn from.

### Primary Responsibilities

Own the end-to-end design process for Nota experiences, from early discovery and problem definition through detailed design, validation, delivery, and iteration. Partner closely with product, engineering, and business stakeholders to understand customer and business needs, define opportunities, and translate them into intuitive digital experiences. Plan and conduct customer research, usability testing, interviews, and other discovery activities to build a deeper understanding of attorneys, law firms, and their banking needs.

Help facilitate Nota’s client advisory council, using ongoing customer relationships and feedback to inform product decisions, validate concepts, and identify opportunities for future experiences. Create user flows, journey maps, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs that simplify complex banking, account management, and trust account workflows. Use customer insights, research, analytics, and product feedback to identify usability concerns and opportunities to improve the Nota experience.

Collaborate with designers across Business and Wealth banking to share patterns, leverage M&T’s design system, and create consistent experiences across the broader digital ecosystem. Partner with Compliance, Legal, Risk, and other stakeholders to understand regulatory and business requirements and incorporate them thoughtfully into the customer experience. Contribute to product roadmap and prioritization conversations by bringing a customer-centered design perspective and identifying opportunities, usability concerns, and customer-impact priorities.

### Scope of Responsibilities

This role serves as the dedicated Product Designer for Nota and requires a high degree of independence, curiosity, and comfort working in an evolving product environment. The designer will move between research, discovery, strategy, and detailed product design based on the needs of the product and team. The role does not have direct reports but is expected to independently drive design work, facilitate cross-functional collaboration, advocate for customers, and contribute to the broader Digital Experience Design (DxD) practice at M&T.

### Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor's degree in UX Design, Human Computer Interaction, Industrial Design, or similar, and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 7 years education and/or relevant/product design work experience. Experience designing for workflow-intensive, enterprise, or form-heavy experiences, preferably in regulated industries. Demonstrated ability to apply user-centered design methods throughout the product lifecycle.

Proficiency with Figma and modern design tools such as Adobe CC and Miro. Ability to communicate clearly, collaborate with stakeholders, and incorporate feedback into your work. Understanding of accessibility standards and best practices for inclusive design. Experience working with agile development teams and iterating based on feedback and data.

Preferred: Experience designing financial services, fintech, legal technology, or other complex, regulated digital products. Experience as an early or embedded designer on a small, cross-functional product team, including comfort establishing design practices and working across multiple areas of the design process. Experience working directly with customers through research, advisory councils, customer panels, or other ongoing feedback programs.

### Core Competencies

Customer-Centered Design: Builds a deep understanding of customers and uses research, feedback, and observation to guide design decisions.

### Product Thinking

Connects customer needs, business objectives, and technical considerations to identify and design meaningful product opportunities.

### Research & Discovery

Comfortable planning and conducting research, facilitating conversations with customers, synthesizing insights, and translating findings into actionable product direction.

### Interaction Design

Simplifies complex workflows and information into intuitive, accessible, and effective digital experiences.

### Collaboration & Facilitation

Builds strong partnerships across Product, Engineering, Design, and business teams and effectively facilitates conversations with customers and stakeholders.

### Ownership & Adaptability

Works independently, navigates ambiguity, and comfortably shifts between strategic thinking, research, facilitation, and hands-on design as product needs evolve. M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $85,800.00 - $143,000.00 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
