In this role, you'll tackle the intricate challenge of computing correct tax amounts thousands of times per second while ensuring audit compliance across dozens of countries. You'll collaborate with peers across Amazon's business to design and operate highly scalable, reliable systems that handle hundreds of millions of records. Whether you're drawn to solving complex distributed systems problems or using technology to address real business challenges, this is an opportunity to make a tangible impact on a platform that touches billions of transactions annually. ### Key job responsibilities - Design and implement scalable software solutions that calculate taxes accurately and efficiently across Amazon's global operations, handling millions of service requests per minute - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions that meet tax compliance standards worldwide - Develop, test, and deploy high-quality distributed system software using software engineering best practices and modern development methodologies - Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including design reviews, code reviews, documentation, testing, and operational support of production systems - Contribute to system reliability and performance by monitoring production metrics, identifying optimization opportunities, and implementing improvements to ensure our services meet demanding scale and accuracy requirements ### A day in the life As a Software Development Engineer on our team, you'll engage with the full software development lifecycle—from initial design conversations through deployment and operations. You might start your day reviewing a proposal to optimize tax calculation performance, then move into code review with teammates, discussing architectural approaches to handle increased transaction volume. You'll write and test code in our Java, Linux, and Oracle-based environment, collaborate with engineers across different Amazon business units to understand their tax requirements, and participate in on-call rotations to ensure our services remain reliable. Your work directly influences how quickly and accurately customers receive tax information at checkout, and you'll see the real-world impact of your contributions through our monitoring and metrics. ### About the team We are a group of engineers committed to building and maintaining the tax platform that serves as the backbone for tax compliance across Amazon's global operations.
